AUTHENTICATION ALERTS
The Shimon Okshteyn Estate has become aware of works being represented as original works by Shimon Okshteyn that the Estate has determined are not authentic. This page documents examples currently known to the Estate and, where applicable, compares them with authenticated works from the Estate's records.
Collectors, galleries, auction houses, dealers and other art-market professionals are encouraged to contact the Estate regarding authentication of works attributed to Shimon Okshteyn.
MADISON AVENUE ON SALE
The work on the right follows the distinctive structure of the original painting Madison Avenue on Sale, 1984 (oil on canvas, 40 x 50 in. / 101.6 x 127 cm): a fashion figure at left, a shop-window display at right, a diagonal red leash, a white dog, and the same overall storefront arrangement. Significantly, the shoes in the non-authentic work are completely different from those depicted in the original, and the dog's face and features have been substantially altered, giving it a distinctly different appearance. The non-authentic work also materially alters the woman's costume and hat, the window garments and accessories, architectural details, proportions, and color relationships.
The Shimon Okshteyn Estate has determined that the work shown on the right is not an authentic work by Shimon Okshteyn.
TIMELESS STYLE
The work on the right follows the distinctive central male mannequin figure and overall vertical format of the authentic original collage on paper Timeless Style, 1987 (44 x 29 in. / 111.8 x 73.7 cm). It retains the bowler hat, mustached stylized face, yellow garment, patterned neckwear, articulated mannequin torso, sweeping red form on the right, and the large curved dark foreground pedestal/counter. Significantly, the non-authentic work omits the distinctive “Timeless Style” inscription appearing in the upper right corner of the authenticated work. It also materially changes the face and hat, neckwear and textile patterns, background geometry and notation, torso modeling and surrounding pictorial details, and introduces a horse/head-and-harness element behind the figure that is not present in the authenticated work.

CALL GIRL
The work on the right closely follows the highly specific composition of the original painting Call Girl, 1984 (oil on canvas, 24 x 19 in. / 61 x 48.3 cm): a single woman in a dark hat, cigarette at her mouth, long red fingernails, nearly identical hand positions, dark striped clothing, strong vertical background panels, and a broad red foreground. Most significantly, the distinctive black mesh/fishnet fingerless gloves in the original have been replaced in the non-authentic work with entirely different solid gray cuffs/gloves with striped detailing. The non-authentic work also introduces prominent red-and-black painted framing around the figure that is not present in the original composition. It further changes the bright green background panels, removes the thin red horizontal line behind the figure, and alters the face, hat, clothing, and surrounding geometry.

SHOPPING COUPLE
No authentic work titled Shopping Couple exists in the Shimon Okshteyn Estate's records. Shimon Okshteyn did not create this composition, and the title Shopping Couple is not an authentic title by the artist.
The non-authentic work is marked “1997” and “63/100.” The purported artist inscription appears to spell the surname “Okshtayn” rather than “Okshteyn.”
The Shimon Okshteyn Estate has determined that this work is not authentic. The title Shopping Couple is a fabricated title, and the signature and handwritten inscriptions appearing on the work are not the signature or handwriting of Shimon Okshteyn.
